Harold Seward Link

September 19, 1920 ~ July 8, 2016 (age 95) 95 Years Old


Harold Seward Link, 95, of Mount Lebanon, PA, passed away peacefully on Friday July 8th at his residence in Mount Lebanon with his wife of 64 years by his side.  He was born on September 19, 1920 in Deer Lodge, Tennessee to the late Frank and Etta nee Phillips Link.  The family relocated to Pittsburgh when Harold was 3 years old.  He grew up in the Bellwood neighborhood of West Mifflin, PA and graduated from Munhall High School. He was a devoted and loving son and brother.  In 1942, while attending the University of Pittsburgh, Harold enlisted in the military and served as a Lieutenant JG in the United States Navy until the war ended in 1945.  He was stationed on the Destroyer USS Walker and was involved in operations throughout the Pacific including the Okinawa Gunto, Philippine Islands, and Japanese Empire and was awarded several medals for his involvement there. Harold graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1947 with a BS Degree in Metallurgical Engineering and also pursued graduate studies there.  He worked for United States Steel Corporation for over 40 years and spent most of his time at the corporate Research Laboratory where he was a Chief Staff Engineer specializing in high strength steel products, stainless steels, metallography, failure analysis and materials technology and was granted four U.S. Patents. Harold married the love of his life, Marcella Martin in 1952.  Together they raised 5 children who were grateful to have had such a loving father.  Harold was known by all for his kindness, generosity, humor and wit.  He was a great story teller and always ready with a pun.  He loved hiking, camping, canoeing and exploring nature.  Throughout his life Harold was devoted in his Catholic faith and led by example throughout his life. Harold is preceded in death by siblings Frank Link, Edith Miller, Thomas Link , Ernest Link and great grandson Isaiah Benayah Freeman. He is survived by his beloved wife Marcella nee Martin, children Theresa (Jerome) Borchers, Judith (John) Oliver, Michael (Lisa) Link, Thomas Link, Sarah Link, 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Friends will be received at Laughlin Memorial Chapel 222 Washington Road Mt. Lebanon on Thursday 2-4 & 6-8 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered in St. Bernard Church on Friday at 10:00 AM.
