Marie Collier Hughes

Age 95, of Pittsburgh, PA, passed away on Thursday, January 28, 2016, after completing a full and happy life. Marie was born in Pittsburgh on April 30, 1920; the daughter of Mary and Robert Collier. She graduated from Carrick High School in 1937. She was married to William Hughes on October 12, 1942. They were married for 41 years. Her true joy in life was being the proud mother of her seven children. She also loved the company of her extended family. She was a devoted Catholic and was actively involved in St. Anne’s Church and volunteered in the mail room at Mercy Hospital. She enjoyed walking, quilting, sewing, singing in a choir, travel, music, movies, the Pittsburgh Pirates, Perry Como, smiling Irish eyes, and anything green. Marie is survived by her children, Dan, Mary Pat Sullivan (John), Kathleen English (Diane), Bill (Liz), John, and Michael (Annie), daughter in-law Mary Lou, fourteen grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and other family and friends. Marie was preceded in death by her husband William, her son Jim, her brothers, Bill and Ralph Collier, and her sister, Gene Schmitt. The family extends their deep gratitude to Asbury Heights for the compassionate and faithful care that they gave Marie for 9 years. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 5th from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Laughlin Memorial Chapel, 1008 Castle Shannon Boulevard. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, February 6th at 9:30 am in St. Anne’s Catholic Church of Castle Shannon, with Rev. Robert George officiating. Interment will follow at St. Anne’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made, in memory of Marie Hughes, to the Asbury Foundation, 700 Bower Hill Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15243 or to Family Hospice, 50 Moffett Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15243.
