Virdyn Royal Caldwell III

September 1, 1933 ~ January 9, 2018 (age 84) 84 Years Old


Age 84, of Mt. Lebanon, on Tuesday, January 9, 2018.  Virdyn (VC) shared an amazing life with his wife of 60 years, Carolyn Hoerger Caldwell.  VC’s legacy continues with his daughters, Julie Smith (John)  and Amy Riley, grandchildren Kathryn Smith (Erik Doughty), Julie Riley, Maggie Smith, Emily Riley, Shane Smith and Patrick Smith, and great grandson Cameron Doughty.  He will be missed by sister  Barbara Pryor (C. William),  a brother Norman (Bonnie),  sister-in-law Janet Scandrol and nieces and nephews:  Billy (Anne) Pryor, Jane Pryor,  Norman Caldwell,  Krista Caldwell , Paula Scandrol and John Scandrol.

Raised in Dormont, Virdyn attended Dormont High School where he played football and excelled at track and field.  He was active at Dormont Presbyterian Church where he met Carolyn when they attended a community church youth event.

Virdyn attended Pittsburgh University graduating with a Business degree in 1956.  The following year he and Carolyn were married on June 22, 1957. There after they moved to Buffalo NY.  In 1960, excited for their birth of their first child, they were surprised by the delivery of twins. Virdyn and Carolyn returned to Pittsburgh and settled into their Mt. Lebanon home in the great neighborhood of Sunset Hills in 1962 where they lived for 58 years before moving to Providence Point.  Virdyn was active in politics at the local, state and national level.  He was a member of the Mt. Lebanon Jaycess, where a special group of young men became close friends for life.

He joined State Mutual Life Assurance Company of America (SMA) on April 1, 1961 with thanks to Harry Corbet.  There he began a long successful career as an insurance agent and later a financial planner.  While at SMA he achieved his Charter Life Underwriter (CLU) certification. He would also lead that organizations Pennsylvania Chapter.  At 70, when most were considering retirement, Virdyn chose to join Mass Mutual on December 1, 2003 to continue his life’s work.  After Mass Mutual and throughout the remainder of his life, he continued his passion to assist and educate others to be financially prepared for the future.  

Virdyn and Carolyn where lifelong members of Sunset Hills United Presbyterian Church, where he held various leadership positions and to the surprise of many, joined the choir in his later years, as music was a passion.

Virdyn created and maintained deep personal and professional friendships that in most cases continued throughout his life.  His greatest joys in his life included his family and friends, travel, great adventures, good company, good food, laughter and lots of fun along the way and a “perfect” Wild Turkey Manhattan.   Cheers!

 Family and friends will be received on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until time of a celebration of life service at 11a.m. in Sunset Hills United Presbyterian Church, 900 County Club Drive, Pittsburgh, PA  15228
