J. Joseph Lackner

March 19, 1930 ~ January 10, 2021 (age 90)


J. Joseph Lackner, 90, passed away peacefully on January 10, 2021, at home surrounded by his family.  Joe was born in Knoxville on March 19, 1930, the youngest of five boys born to Frank and Marguerite Hamill Lackner.  He attended St. Mary of the Mount High School and Duquesne University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.  He served in Korea in the Army from 1952-1954.  In 1955, Joe married his Irish sweetheart, Mary McGill.  He joined his brother Dan at Paper Products Company where he worked for 64 years. He was a long-time member of St. Bernard Parish where he was an active member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. He also served as a board member of Marian Manor. However, Joe will be best remembered as a loving husband and father, as well as his devotion to God and his Catholic faith. Joe is survived by his beloved wife Mary of 65 years; proud and loving father of Mary Pat Bielich (John), Ann O’Leary (Daniel), Joseph (Carol Ritchey), James, Julia Ryan (Paul), Thomas (Bonnie), and beloved guardian of his cousin Edmund; awesome grandfather of Megan Bielich, Steven Bielich (Jackie), Bridget Bielich, Katie O’Leary (Matt Bemer), Maureen O’Leary (Nate Fister), Rebecca Boss (Zachary), Rapher Ryan (Elizabeth), Claire Ryan, Kevin Ryan, Jack Ryan, Ben Lackner, Emily Lackner, Drew Lackner (Catalina), Kelly Martinez (Filipe), and Andrea Mekulik (Edward); and delighted great grandfather of Isabella, Katelyn, Illiana, and Madison. Joe was preceded in death by his brothers Msgr. Paul Lackner, Rev. Francis Lackner, Vincent Lackner, and Daniel Lackner. Joe touched the lives of so many people with his smile and sense of humor.  A humble man with a big heart who made the world a much happier place. Due to COVID-19, viewing hours have been omitted. A public Funeral Mass will be offered in St. Bernard Church (St. Michael the Archangel Parish), 311 Washiington Road, Mt. Lebanon on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. (masks and social distancing will be required). Private interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. The family requests No Flowers, please.
