Roger died on January 16, 2022 at the age of 83 after a long struggle with declining health. He remained courageous and in good spirits to the end. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Kathleen (Nee) Curran and his brother Joseph Nee Curran. He was the beloved husband for close to 32 years of Vivian (Grosswald) Curran, and the beloved step-father of Robert Emile Murphy and Charles Francis Murphy (Elizabeth Stanley). Five months ago, he became the step-grandfather of Solveig Emilia Stanley Murphy.
Roger was an officer in the U.S. army after he graduated from college, serving in Augsburg, Germany in military intelligence. He returned to the U.S. to study law at the University of Pittsburgh, clerking for a state court judge before beginning his life-long practice as a litigator at the Pittsburgh law firm of Rose Schmidt Hasley & DiSalle. He remained there, first as an associate, then as a partner, for approximately thirty years, also becoming a member of the Academy of Trial Lawyers. After his retirement, he spent most of his time reading about French military and political history, a lifelong passion. He became a specialist of the 19th-century Dreyfus trials and the period of the Second World War in France. He will be greatly missed.
