On Thursday, March 16, 2023, Rose T. Gillen, of Mt. Lebanon passed away peacefully at the age of 90. Rose was the daughter of the late Peter and Helen Kadyszewski. She is survived by her beloved husband of over 40 years, Leo Gillen. In addition to her husband, she leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Rose was preceded in death by all 8 of her siblings, Edmund, Marie, Sr. Mary Thomas, Sr. Mary Jane; Sr. Amandine, Joseph, Stanley, and Helen.
Rose grew up in the coal mining town of Ranshaw, PA, before entering and accepting vows of Religious Sisterhood. Becoming fluent in Latin, Polish, Italian, and Spanish, Rose also earned master’s degrees in French and Linguistics. In mid-life Rose embarked on a new vocation when she married Leo, the great love of her life, whom she cherished and adored to the very end. A gifted educator, Rose had a second career teaching Literature in the Mt. Lebanon School District, from where she retired in 1997. Rose led a humble, faith-filled life loving God and her neighbor. She had many beloved pets, and welcomed and fed any creature who would visit her lovely gardens. Rose was a humanitarian, a champion of the poor, the oppressed, and the less-fortunate. As a daughter, wife, friend, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, godmother, and teacher, Rose was a generous and comforting presence in countless lives. All who knew her now mourn the loss of a great woman.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at Ss. Simon & Jude Church, 1607 Greentree Rd. Pittsburgh, PA 15220, on Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at 10am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to be made to Little Sisters of the Poor, 1028 Benton Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15212.
