Marilyn Steward, age 87, died peacefully in Mount Lebanon, PA, on July 27, 2018. Born February 22, 1931, in Van Wert, OH, Marilyn was the middle daughter of the late Poe and Grace Doner. Over the course of her long life, Marilyn reached many milestones and had a positive impact on everyone she knew. She was a beloved wife, a devoted mother, and doting grandmother, and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with family and friends. Early in her life, she worked at the Continental Can Company in Van Wert, OH, as a teletype operator, and again in Midland, MI, as the secretary to the plant manager. She married Omar Steward in July of 1958 and they moved to Pittsburgh in 1964. In addition to raising three sons, Marilyn earned a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a Master’s of Arts in General Studies from Duquesne University, worked with the local soup kitchen and women’s shelter, and renovated three houses in the Uptown district. A spiritual, loving, and independent woman, Marilyn enjoyed traveling and learning. She and Omar lived in England for a year in the early 1960s and over the course of their lives, they traveled to many places, including France, Spain, Italy, Austria, Germany, Holland, Belgium, Greece, Malta, Japan, Scotland, Australia, Canada, Costa Rica and many other locations around the world. She was a long-time member of many local and regional non-profit organizations as well as the prayer group at Berean Fellowship Church. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Omar W. Steward, her three sons Mark Steward, Graham (Lisa) Steward, and Brent Steward, seven grandchildren Nathaniel, Senna, Sydney, Grace, Ian, Stephen, and Connor, and her sister Carol Leathers. Family and friends will gather for a Celebration of Life Service at the Berean Fellowship Church, 300 Rockfield Circle, Pittsburgh (Scott Twp.) PA 15243 at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, August 17. A graveside service will be held in Van Wert, OH on August 20. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Western Pennsylvania Conservancy.
