Age 64, Dale tragically died after a biking accident in Charleston, South Carolina on Monday afternoon, April 7, 2025. ((He was a proud organ donor)).
Devoted son of the late Norman and Bernadine (Haney) Morris; caring father of Ciaran and Emily Morris; former husband of Regina McNulty; brother of Linda (Jim) Brickner, Deborah Morris and Darlene (William) Ferguson; uncle of Kim Williams, Melissa Barsic, Jason and Lauren Ferguson; great uncle of Isabella and Brandon Williams; also survived by his beloved dog Rocky along with many other family members and friends.
Dale was a United States Air Force veteran serving from 1979 – 1984. He received his BA in Political Science from the University of Pittsburgh (1987) at Johnstown and his Master’s of Arts in Foreign Affairs at University of Virginia (1989).
After leaving college, he joined the staff of Gus Yatron, Pennsylvania's United States House of Representatives. In 1994 he became a communications staff member at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Washington DC and later worked as an senior advisor in the Embassy’s Economics Affairs department. He played a pivotal role in water management through the Dutch Dialogues across the United States after hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans in 2005. He dedicated 24 years of his life to serving this endeavor.
He left the embassy in 2018 to become the Director of Strategic Partnerships for the Water Institute in Louisiana. Three years later he accepted the role of Chief Resilience Officer for the city of Charleston in South Carolina.
Upon learning of his death, former Charleston Mayor, John Tecklenburg, made the following statements for a Charleston newspaper..
“He brought with him connections to the best minds in the world when it comes to water management and resilience at a time when Charleston needed that direction.”
“All Charlestonians benefited from his experience and expertise, but also from his integrity and his amazing sense of care and concern for this community that he adopted.“
He recently started teaching at Clemson University.
Dale enjoyed going on vacations with his children, bicycling, skiing, hiking, teaching and reading, brewing and drinking draft beers. Among his favorite authors were Charles Dickens and JRR Tolkien. He was an avid fan of The Pittsburgh Penguins’ Mario Lemieux and Sidney Crosby and watched as many games as he could after he moved from Pittsburgh. He was an avid traveler. Dale frequently traveled to Europe for the embassy and traveled around the United States for his other positions. He particularly enjoyed New Orleans. He was planning a trip to Paris and London in the fall of this year
He will be remembered by all who knew him and sorely missed by his family.
Friends will be welcomed at Laughlin Cremation and Funeral Tributes, 222 Washington Road, Mount Lebanon, PA. on Saturday afternoon, April 26, 2025 from 1:00 until 4:00 o’clock. Interment will be private.
