Doris Bower Obituary

 On Thursday, January 13, 2022 Doris Masse Bower, 94, of Mt Lebanon, PA passed away. Her husband of 71 years, Howard Bower, and her four children were by her side. Doris was born in Pittsburgh, PA on August 4, 1927. She graduated from Elizabeth High School and received a journalism degree from Westminster College in 1949 where she met Howard, who had recently returned home from serving in WWII. After graduation, Doris worked as a reporter for the Pittsburgh Sun Telegraph and the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. After taking a break to raise her family, Doris began writing medical and health informational booklets for the Allegheny County Health Department. That led her to begin her own business, Media Information Services, where reporters contacted her for research on medical and health issues. Doris was an active member of the Pittsburgh Press Club and served as the President of the Women’s Press Club. Doris was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who brightened the lives of those she met. Her dedication to family, community, and faith was evident throughout her life. She was a proud member of the Philanthropic Educational Organization (PEO), an organization that provides support for the education of women. Doris is survived by her husband, Howard; her children, Lynn Landis, Roy Bower (Nancy), Holly Miller (Ernie), and James Bower (Susan); her grandchildren, Christopher Heilman (Sarah), Elizabeth Greenwald (Jeff), Gregory Heilman; Roy Bower, Mark Bower (Jill); Kristen Miller, Jennifer Henderson (Connor), Matthew Miller; Leigh Valenzuela (Christian), Luke Bower, Michael Bower, Sarah Bower; her great grandchildren, Evelyn, Asher, Joshua and Matthew Heilman; Aiden and Madison Greenwald; and Lilly and Gloria Bower; and her brother Tony Masse of Naples, FL. A  memorial service will be held in Westminster Presbyterian Church on Saturday, March 26 at 11:00 AM in In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial gifts be made on behalf of Doris to P.E.O.  (peointernational.org.) Condolences may be expressed online www.laughlinfuneralhome.com
