Dr. Dennis Manning Obituary

The Holy Host of Angels surrounded Dennis Manning, MD and carried him to heaven on Tuesday October 29, 2024.  Dennis believed his calling in life was to serve and reverence God in all of his actions, personally and professionally, to bring others closer to Him.  He was truly a disciple of God.

Dennis was born in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, the first-born son of Lawrence James Manning, Jr., and Elaine Healey Manning.   He attended St. Bernard’s Grade School, South Hills Catholic High School, The College of the Holy Cross and Hahnemann Medical College.  Dennis held board certifications in cardiology, geriatrics, and internal medicine.

In 1985 Dennis opened his solo medical practice at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh where he cared for patients for sixteen years.  In 2001, he and his wife made the decision to return to Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota, where Dennis previously trained.  Over his twenty-three years of practice at Mayo Clinic, Dennis conducted himself with the humility of St. Francis.  In the words of his close colleague “Dennis practiced what he called “personomics”, always seeing the person before the diagnosis.  He was not only a doctor, but a teacher, a confidant and his patients’ greatest advocate.  Through his example, we learned.”  A devout Catholic physician, Dennis would often say “In caring about the patient, we emulate the Saints.”

Believing medicine an avocation, Dennis felt his true vocation was to family.  He is survived by his beloved wife of 26 years, Lisabeth Manning, three sisters, Mary Olivia Crowley (Kevin), Mary Eileen Schaldenbrand (Charles-Deceased) and Mary Elaine McClelland (Glenn).  He was preceded in death by his father Lawrence James Manning, Jr., his mother Elaine Healey Manning, and his brother Lawrence Jay (L. Jay) Manning (Maureen).  Dennis cherished his thirteen nieces and nephews (Katie Crowley, Kasey Crowley, Heinz Schaldenbrand (Ashley), Elizabeth Wheeler (Braden), Seamus Schaldenbrand, Peter Schaldenbrand, River McClelland, Maggie McClelland, Elena Manning, Brendan Manning, Kelly Kaupinis (Eric), Daniel Struth (Lindsie), Jennifer Struth and five grand nieces and nephews (Miles Wheeler, Archer Brown, Kip Kaupinis, Sophie Kaupinis and Tyler Kaupinis).

Visitation will be Friday, November 8, 2024, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Laughlin Cremation & Funeral Tributes 222 Washington Road, Mt. Lebanon.

Mass of Christian burial will be offered Saturday, November 9, 2024, at 10 a.m., St. Bernard’s Catholic Church (St Michael the Archangel Parish) at 311 Washington Road, Pittsburgh PA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Dennis Manning’s name to the Poverello Fund, Mayo Clinic.  The Poverello Fund is a ministry that helps patients in need at Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota.

The family wishes to send a special thank you to the physicians and staff at Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota, especially the Hematology team and staff on unit LC, for their care and compassion during Dennis’ treatment
