Age 90, formerly of Mount Lebanon, originally of Stanton Heights, peacefully on Easter Sunday, April 20, 2025. Husband for 56 years of the late Mary Eleanor (McGervey) Kohnfelder; proud father of Roger, Nora, John, Rebecca (Victor) Mikelonis, David (Frances), Olivia, Lucy Yager; loving grandfather of Brendan (Millie Johnson) Yager, Adelyn Kohnfelder; great-grandfather of Sedona Yager; son of the late Earl and Myrtle (Kirschner) Kohnfelder; dear cousin of Lee Oltcher.
Earl attended Peabody High School and Penn State University and served in the U.S. Army Reserves. He applied his journalism degree to a career as a newspaper reporter, briefly at the Homestead City Messenger before a storied 32-year run at The Pittsburgh Press. After The Press succumbed to a labor strike in December 1992, Earl worked a brief stint at The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review before spending 16 years with Verizon. Earl was an avid fan of all Pittsburgh sports, always sharing trivia and tales, including the time he talked scorecards with Roberto Clemente.
Friends will be welcomed at Laughlin Cremation and Funeral Tributes, 222 Washington Road, Mt. Lebanon on Sunday afternoon from 1:00 until 4:00. Funeral services will be held at the funeral home on Tuesday afternoon, April 29th at 12:15, followed by interment in Mount Royal Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Earl's memory to Paralyzed Veterans of America.
