George Peters Obituary

George J. Peters of Mt. Lebanon, Pa., passed away peacefully on March 25, 2025, with Suellen Peters, his wife of 42 years, and beloved dog Fred by his side. George is survived by sons Chris (Kelly O’Toole) of Annapolis, Md., and Jeff of Sykesville, Md.; daughter Sandra Muthersbaugh (Randy) of State College; stepson Neal Simons (Lauren) of Charmouth, United Kingdom; grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and first wife Virginia Patterson of State College, Pa.

George was born in Washington, Pa., on Feb. 14, 1936. After earning a bachelor’s degree in forestry from West Virginia University, he worked at Hazel-Atlas glass factory before transitioning to radiation research at Argonne National Laboratory in Chicago. George’s career took another turn when he earned a Master of Divinity degree from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary and served as a minister at several Presbyterian churches in the area.

By the mid 70’s, George’s focus was on helping others. After leading a youth counseling center in State College, Pa., he provided crisis counseling, riding with the Dravosburg, Pa., police on domestic calls. The move to alcohol and drug rehabilitation was a natural one, where he provided counseling services to many in the Pittsburgh region. George finished his career of service to others as manager of the Phoenix Lodge, where he worked with a wonderful team of mental health professionals.

George loved to sing and spent 27 years as a second bass with the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, performing in venues from Carnegie Hall in New York to the storied concert halls of Europe. He had the honor of being one of a handful asked to sing at the funeral of Senator John Glenn. George’s love of history led him to volunteer at the Meadowcroft Rockshelter and Isaac Manchester House, both in Washington County.

Interment will be private. Donations may be made in his memory to the American Lyme Disease Foundation at www.aldf.com.
