Howard George Bower, 96, of Mt Lebanon, PA went to be with the Lord on February 11, 2023 with his family by his side. Howard was born in Mt Lebanon on May 16, 1926. He graduated from Mt Lebanon High School and enlisted in the Army Air Corps; during World War II. Howard was stationed in Italy where he was a Belly Gunner on a B- 24 Liberator. He flew missions into Romania and Albania with the 449th Flying Horsemen: the 15th Air Force, 47th Bomb Wing, 449th Bomb Group, 718th Bomb Squadron.
After the war, Howard returned home and graduated from Westminster College with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics. He met his wife, Doris Masse, and they married in 1950, at which time Howard began teaching for the Pittsburgh Public School System. Over his 40-year career, he taught in several of Pittsburgh’s schools, including Latimer Junior High, Westinghouse High School, and Taylor Allderdice High School. He eventually became Supervisor of Mathematics. He continued his education, receiving a Master of Science from the University of Colorado and a Master of Education from the University of Pittsburgh.
Howard loved Pittsburgh - living in Upper St. Clair, Sewickley, and finally returning to Mt. Lebanon. He also enjoyed retirement in Naples, Florida, forever proud of his four shuffleboard championships!
Howard was the loving husband of Doris for 71 years and is survived by his four children and their families. Lynn Landis, Roy Bower (Nancy), Holly Miller (Ernie), and James Bower (Susan); his grandchildren, Christopher Heilman (Sarah), Elizabeth Greenwald (Jeff), Gregory Heilman; Roy Bower, Mark Bower (Jill); Kristen Miller, Jennifer Henderson (Connor), Matthew Miller; Leigh Valenzuela (Christian), Luke Bower, Michael Bower, Sarah Bower; and great grandchildren, Evelyn, Asher, Joshua and Matthew Heilman; Aiden and Madison Greenwald; Lilly and Gloria Bower; Charlotte Henderson; and John Valenzuela.
A Military Burial Service is scheduled for 12:30 PM, May 19, 2023 at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, and a Memorial Service will follow at 2:00 PM in Westminster Presbyterian Church 2040 Washington Rd., PIttsburgh, PA 15241.
Howard always loved animals, so, in lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be made in Howard’s name to your favorite Animal Rescue Center.
