Age 85, surrounded by his loving family at their Dormont home, on Thursday, May 13, 2021. Beloved husband for 61 years of Joan Patricia “Pat” Schmitt; devoted father of Jerry (Paula) Schmitt, Sandy Schmitt, Ron Schmitt and Judy (Bruce) McCoy; proud “Pap” of Sara McCoy and Matt Schmitt; son of the late Francis Henry and Margaret Mary Schmitt; brother of the late Marge (Robert) Thomas and John “Jack” Coyne; uncle of Bea Coyne, John (Terri) Coyne and the late Gary Coyne; great uncle of Jeff Coyne. Jake grew up in Allentown where he attended St. George Catholic School and Church. He served in the Army for several years out of high school and then became a Steelworker for over 40 years with J & L Steel and Metal Tech. He moved to Dormont to raise four children and was a longtime member of Saint Bernard Catholic Church. Jake played sports growing up and encouraged his children to do the same. He coached many young athletes in baseball from Little League through American Legion as part of the Dormont Boosters. In retirement he enjoyed watching his grandchildren by attending their concerts and sporting events. He proudly wore his “55” favorite number on an old Dukes jersey to watch his son Jerry coach Duquesne Football. Jake also enjoyed watching the Pirates and playing golf especially with his sons and often reminded them of his hole-in-one. He was a youth and high school football official for many years and a member of the Dormont VFW where he spent many years enjoying laughs and conversation about sports and his family. We would like to extend our most heartfelt gratitude to Nicole, Barb, and Sara from Gateway Hospice for helping Jake spend his last days with his family. Friends will be received at Laughlin Cremation and Funeral Tributes, 222 Washington Road, Mt. Lebanon on Monday from 4:00 until 7:00pm. (while adhering to State COVID mandate of Masks and Social Distancing). Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Bernard Church (St. Michael the Archangel Parish) on Tuesday morning at 10. Interment will follow in Queen of Heaven Cemetery. If desired, memorials may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society. www.laughlinfuneralhome.com
