Joan C. Sterling

Joan Sterling, of Castle Shannon, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on June 27, 2026, at the age of 80.

Born on May 16, 1946, Joan grew up in Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania. She dedicated her life to education and to making a difference in the lives of children with special needs. A graduate of the University of Kentucky with a degree in Special Education, she later earned a double master's degree from Duquesne University.

Joan devoted 34 years to Pittsburgh Public Schools, where her passion for special education guided a distinguished career. She began as a classroom teacher, advanced to Assistant Principal, and ultimately served as Principal of Conroy Education Center. Throughout her career, Joan was respected for her unwavering commitment to her students, her leadership, and her compassion.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Norman and Barbara Sterling; her sister, Margaret Moody; and her brother, Norman Sterling. She is lovingly survived by her niece, Carole Salvato and her husband, Philip Salvato, as well as her great-nephew, Brian Salvato, and great-niece, Kaley Salvato.

Beyond her professional accomplishments, Joan will be remembered as a cherished aunt and great-aunt whose kind heart, generous spirit, and quiet strength touched everyone who knew her. Her love for her family and her lifelong dedication to helping others will remain her enduring legacy.

In accordance with Joan's wishes, no viewing or funeral services will be held.

She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her family, friends, colleagues, former students, and all whose lives she enriched.
