John Baker Obituary

age 89, of Mt. Lebanon, died peacefully on Thursday, October 29, 2020, at Providence Point. John is survived by his wife of 65 years, Shirley English Baker; children, Elizabeth Paul of Mt Lebanon, Ellen Hand (Samuel) of Phoenix, Arizona and William Baker (Karen) of Pine; grandchildren Robert, Nora, Clarissa, Owen, Brady and Molly. He is preceded in death by his parents, George and Nora McNutt Baker, his infant daughter, Virginia and his brothers William Alfred Baker (Maggie) and Joseph Kennard Baker (Lib). John was born on August 8, 1931 in Washington, PA and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh. He married Shirley, his college sweetheart in 1955. John served in the US Army in Germany from 1957 to 1958. He was an executive with Colt Industries and Koppers. His children remember him as a witty and generous father. We are indebted to him for his support and encouragement in our academic and professional careers.  He was an active and dedicated member of Mt Lebanon United Methodist Church where he loved singing hymns. A Memorial Service is scheduled for Saturday, November 7, 2020 at 2:00 PM at Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church, 3319 W. Liberty Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15216. Rev. Thomas Strandburg will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend.  Burial at Washington Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, 4401 Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15224.
