John T. Engel

John Thomas Engel, age 88, passed peacefully, with family by his side, on Friday April 5, 2024. He was the beloved husband of 64 years to Joann Engel (nee Hanyak); father of Barbara Ard (Bill), Georgeanne Cluskey (Joel), Robert Engel, Jeanne Engel (Dan Geiger), and David Engel (Alexis); grandfather of Gregory Horvath (Allison McKnight), Christopher Cluskey, Daniel Cluskey, Zachary Engel, and Madeline Engel; brother of Barb Setler, Mary Parker, Kathy Macie, Vincent Engel (Pam), Gerry Engel (Agnes), and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by his parents Vincent Paul and Elizabeth Frances Engel, and his sister Margaret Bennett.

Formerly of West Mifflin, John was born in Terre Haute, Indiana on July 10, 1935.  He grew up in East McKeesport, PA and attended the University of Pittsburgh where he received a bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering.  He began work at Heppenstall as a Metallurgical Engineer.  After a few years, he began a career at Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory where he retired in 2000.  John was an active member of Resurrection Church in West Mifflin, Pa where he served as lector, Eucharistic minister, and CCD teacher.  He was a member of the finance council as well as the Knights of Columbus. More recently, John was a member of St. Michael the Archangel parish in Mt. Lebanon, PA. He coached little league baseball, was a Boy scout leader and a devoted father to his five children.  John was an active gardener who took pride in a bountiful harvest each year.

Family and friends will be received at Laughlin Cremation & Funeral Tributes, 222 Washington Rd. Mt. Lebanon, PA 15216, on Tuesday April 9, 2024, from 6-8 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. Bernard Church, 311 Washington Rd. Mt. Lebanon, PA 15216, on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at 10:00 AM. Interment immediately following at Holy Trinity Cemetery, 529 Grant Ave Ext.  West Mifflin, PA 15122.  There will be a luncheon following the burial at the Holy Trinity Social Hall.
