Kathleen Apone Obituary

Age 91, of Scott Township, on May 8, 2020.  Wife of the late Carl A. Apone, beloved mother of Elizabeth Salamon, and loving grandmother to Emily and Sarah. Also survived by a sister, Joan King. She was the kindest, gentlest soul. There was always an animal to save, a hand to hold, a soft word to share. She forgave instantly and effortlessly, and she loved deeply. She never forgot to bring flowers to the hostess, or send a handwritten note, or show a thousand and one gestures of grace.  She always did the right thing at exactly the right time. She was strong and loved being outdoors, skiing and sailing and traveling. She was always, forever, the prettiest woman in any room. She loved being a wife, a mother and especially an active grandmother who hand baked scones for tea parties. She would visit a neighborhood dog each day, because he was tied up and she couldn't bear to see any creature unhappy. She cared deeply for anyone in need and worked for many years for the St. Vincent de Paul Society, always concerned about feeding families. She listened intently to each person, so vast was her interest in others, and her compassion.  She loved accompanying her husband, the former Pittsburgh Press music critic, to live performances and assisted him with Music for Mt. Lebanon. She was a graduate of Ad Art Studio School and worked for 17 years as a commercial artist, ending with Kaufmann’s Department store as their furniture artist for newspaper ads. She later taught art part time at Ivy School of Professional Art. She was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Grace Church. She was gentle in a harsh world, always sowing seeds of calm, understanding and empathy. She lived a successful life because she always knew what matters most.  Love, just love, only love.  Memorial mass to be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Vincent de Paul Society at Our Lady of Grace Church, 310 Kane Blvd., Pittsburgh PA 15243.
