Louis Munkachy, Ph.D. Obituary

Of Mount Lebanon, Pennsylvania, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at the remarkable age of 96. A man of deep intellect, curiosity, and exceptional kindness, Louis often said how lucky he felt to have reached such an age.

One of Louis’s defining characteristics was his passion for music, which began in his native Hungary. After graduating from the renowned Liszt Academy of Music, he quickly rose to become a conductor of the prestigious Hungarian Union Choir, which performed for the political elite and the general public.

When the Soviet Union invaded Hungary in 1956, Louis and his wife, Emily, courageously decided to flee to the United States with their one-year-old son, George, in search of freedom and opportunity. After arriving in America, Louis worked tirelessly in many jobs to provide for his family, including at a cabinet shop and as a night watchman.

Music remained at the core of his being, and finally, he landed an audition at Duquesne University’s Department of Music, where the faculty immediately recognized his talent and admitted him into the graduate program with a full scholarship. He went on to earn a PhD in music education and became a distinguished professor of music at Duquesne, dedicating three decades to teaching and mentoring students. He was deeply respected and loved by students and colleagues alike, and his legacy lives on in the many he encouraged and inspired along the way.

Outside the classroom, Louis brought his musical gifts to the community, most notably as the longtime choir director at Saint Bernard’s Church. The choir's Christmas performances were especially spectacular, and their excellence under Louis's leadership was widely praised. Louis also joyfully played the piano and the violin and relished attending cultural arts performances of all kinds, including the Pittsburgh opera, symphony, theater, and ballet.

At home, Louis was a devoted husband, a loving and supportive father, and a cherished grandfather who instilled an appreciation of the arts in the entire family. One of his most memorable activities was conducting while the family sang four-part harmonies to celebrate good meals, major accomplishments, and birthdays. He also had a fantastic sense of humor, and his continual puns and “dad” jokes brought joy to every family gathering.

Louis's legacy lives on through his daughter, Susan Pacilio (partner Ed Dukstein); his seven grandchildren: Laura, Julie (Carter), Diana (Dan), Alex, Nick (Kelly), Stephanie, and Becca; and his great-grandchildren: Connor, Norah, and Elsie Jane. He now joins his late wife Emily Munkachy, his son George (Paula), his beloved parents, and his sister in peace. His love of family, gentle nature, and enduring appreciation for beauty in all forms will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

There will be a Celebration of Life reception in the PPG Lobby of Duquesne University School of Music on Saturday afternoon May 31, 2025, from 1:00 until 3:00. Instead of flowers, the family requests donations to the Pittsburgh Opera or the Pittsburgh Symphony in honor of Louis’s lifelong devotion to sharing music and culture.
