On Thursday, January 1, 2026, Louis Christinger (“Chris”) Tomer, 76, passed away surrounded by his wife and children. Chris was born to Julia and Richard Tomer in Lorain, Ohio, in 1949. Distinguishing himself academically from a young age, Chris earned his B.A. in English from the College of Wooster, eventually advancing to a Ph.D. from Case Western University as he became a father to Mary Tomer Byun (Jimmy). Chris relocated to Pittsburgh, becoming a professor of information science at the University of Pittsburgh, endearing himself to colleagues and students with his dry wit and his passion for the subject. Chris married Julie Kracklauer, spending more than 30 years together. Settling in Mt. Lebanon, they raised three children — Caitlin Griffiths (Carl), William Tomer (Emma), and Nora Tomer. After retiring in 2019, Chris spent much of his time at a cherished property in Berlin, Pa., alongside Julie. He found great meaning in tending the land and caring for their many animals, including dogs, ducks, and a cat. Chris was a voracious reader, with an affinity for history books and British mystery novels. He was an avid sports fan, tracking the latest happenings of his favorite teams, and an enthusiast of blues, jazz, and classical music. And, above all else, he was an active and loving husband, father, and grandfather, always eager to offer his love and support in times of need. Chris is survived by his wife, Julie; his children, Mary, Caitlin, William, and Nora; and his grandchildren, Alice, Eleanor, and Benjamin Byun, Oliver and Theodore Griffiths, and Max Tomer. Chris’s soaring intellect, gentle manner, and boundless compassion are irreplaceable.
