Margaret Smith Obituary

Age 93, passed away peacefully surrounded by her daughters on Friday, June 5, 2020, at her home in Providence Point of Pittsburgh. Peggy lived in Mt. Lebanon most of her life.  She earned her pilot’s license at the age of 16 and was the youngest pilot in the United States for a time.  She graduated from Mt. Lebanon High School where she met her future husband, George Smith, in a physics class.  Peggy graduated from Wheaton College in Norton MA with a BS in chemistry.  There she met many other accomplished young women who became her lifelong friends.  After earning a Master’s Degree in Library Science from Carnegie Tech she worked for the Neville Chemical Company as a librarian.  She and George married in 1953 and, after brief stays in Delaware and Kentucky, came back to make their home in Mt. Lebanon.  Peggy and George enjoyed long and richly cultured lives filled with travel, music and fulfillment of their intellectual curiosity.  Peggy is survived by her daughters, Sarah Buffington, her husband Chuck, of Mt. Lebanon; Alice Smith, her husband Doug Spiro, of Baltimore, MD,  and Amy Smith of Dallas, TX. She was interred in the Columbarium at Southminster Presbyterian Church in Mt. Lebanon, beside her husband George.  A small, private memorial service is planned for December. Arrangements by Laughlin Cremation & Funeral Tributes
