Born on June 17, 1938, in Clairton, Pennsylvania, Marion was the son of first-generation Croatian-American parents and grew up with the strong values of faith, family, hard work, and service that guided his entire life. A standout athlete at Clairton High School, he excelled as a star running back for the Clairton Bears. Following the passing of his father, he earned a football scholarship to Lafayette College, where he continued his education and athletic career.
After graduating from Lafayette, Marion pursued his dream of becoming a physician by attending medical school at University College Galway in Ireland. During this time, he married his high school sweetheart, Barbara, beginning a loving partnership that spanned 62 years. He later completed his medical internship at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh.
In 1969, Dr. Vujevich joined the United States Army as a Medical Officer and served in Vietnam. For his service and dedication, he was awarded the Bronze Star. Upon returning home, he completed an Atomic Energy Commission Fellowship in Industrial Medicine and then entered the dermatology residency program at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he served as Chief Resident.
After completing his residency in 1973, Dr. Vujevich returned to Pittsburgh and began what would become a distinguished 45-year career in dermatology. He established practices in Mt. Lebanon, Scott Township, and Washington, Pennsylvania, serving generations of patients throughout the region. In 1998, he founded the Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery Center in Scott Township, where he spent much of his career as a medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatologist. He saw his final patient at age 80, a testament to his commitment to medicine and to those he served. Today, his son, Dr. Justin Vujevich, continues the family tradition through Vujevich Dermatology Associates.
Throughout his career, Dr. Vujevich was known for his exceptional diagnostic abilities, skillful treatment of skin cancer, expertise in cosmetic dermatology, and willingness to embrace innovative therapies. He served as Chief of Dermatology at St. Clair Hospital for 30 years, was a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Dermatology at the University of Pittsburgh, and lectured at national dermatology meetings. He also developed a skincare line for his patients that evolved into what is now known as Vu Skin System. Deeply respected by colleagues and beloved by his patients, he built a reputation not only for clinical excellence but also for the compassion and personal attention he brought to every patient encounter.
Beyond medicine, Dr. Vujevich devoted himself to public service and humanitarian causes. As Honorary Consul of Croatia in Pittsburgh, he proudly promoted Croatian culture and fostered stronger ties between Croatia and the United States. He championed the preservation of St. Nicholas Croatian Catholic Church in Millvale, founded charitable initiatives to support orphaned children affected by the Yugoslavian War, helped fund outpatient medical facilities in Croatia and Bosnia, and encouraged cultural and educational exchanges between nations. He was also a co-founder of the Angels Fund, a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping families meet out-of-pocket medical expenses for children receiving care at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.
Family was the center of Marion's life. He cherished every moment with Barbara, his children, grandchildren, relatives, and friends. He instilled in his family the strong work ethic he learned growing up in the Mon Valley, took immense pride in his Croatian heritage, and always believed that any job worth doing was worth doing right. He was the first to offer a helping hand to someone in need and led by example through generosity, integrity, and perseverance.
Outside of work, Marion embraced life fully. He enjoyed traveling the world, dancing with Barbara, golfing with friends, cheering on the Pittsburgh Steelers, sharing memorable dinners with loved ones, and spending winters together in Naples, Florida. His warmth, humor, and enthusiasm for life touched everyone fortunate enough to know him.
Dr. Vujevich is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Barbara Vujevich; his brother John Vujevich (Cherry Vujevich); his children, Dr. Anne Ward (Dr. John Ward), Deirdre Gardner (Steve Gardner), Mark Vujevich (our angel, Chrissie Vujevich), and Dr. Justin Vujevich (Lisa Vujevich); and his thirteen grandchildren: Alexa (Nick Shah), Brian, Katie, Kelly, Nicole, Megan, Robby, Mark, Sofia, Marion, Leah, Silvana, and Luca. His legacy lives on through the countless patients he healed, the communities he served, the charitable causes he championed, and the family he loved so deeply.
