Martin E. "Marty" Cummings Obituary

Age 67, of Mt. Lebanon, peaceful and without pain, passed away on Saturday, May 9, 2026, after a courageous struggle with multiple health issues.

Born in Pittsburgh on August 26, 1958, Marty was a beloved son of Harry and Dorothy (McAleer) Cummings. Proud of his Pittsburgh roots and deeply connected to his Irish heritage, he carried throughout his life a gift for storytelling and finding joy in everyday moments.

A keen observer of life, he especially loved telling jokes and reminiscing about old family memories. His claimed mastery of “all facts and knowledge” became legendary every year during Thanksgiving or Christmas dinners when his nieces and nephews took great delight in trying—and always failing—to stump their favorite uncle with trivia questions or trick him into answering incorrectly. Usually there was so much laughter that the original questions were forgotten. These post-holiday dinner trivia matchups continue to this day and are a cherished tradition in the Cummings family.

After graduating from Mt. Lebanon High School, Marty completed an undergraduate degree in business from Clarion University and went on to own and operate a residential and commercial cleaning company that served a variety of different clients throughout Western Pennsylvania. Through his work, he built lasting relationships and friendships with many people in the community.

One of Marty’s greatest passions was hockey. He coached local amateur hockey teams throughout the Pittsburgh area for many years. His deep knowledge and love of sport helped bring out the best in the young athletes he coached. The lessons and memories he gave to those players extended far beyond the ice rink and remained with many of them throughout their lives.

Marty was deeply loved and will be dearly missed. He will remain forever in the hearts of all who knew him.

Marty is survived by his daughter, Mary Margaret Tressler; his brother, Jamie Cummings, and Jamie’s wife, Susan McCarthy; and his nieces and nephew, Caitlin Cummings, Sarah Coats, and Christopher Cummings.

In accordance with Marty’s wishes, a Celebration of Life gathering will be announced, at a later date for those who wish to attend to share memories, laugh, cry, and honor the incredible person Marty was.  If desired, contributions can be made to the American Heart Association in Marty’s memory.
