Mary Gibson of Upper St. Clair, age 93, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday May 27, 2025. Cherished wife for 69 years of Gordon Gibson; loving mother of Connie Gibson, Jennie (Jimmy) Eaton, Doug (Melissa) Gibson, Susan Castello, and the late Christopher Gibson; sister of the late James Wolfe; proud grandmother of Karl (Stephanie), Douglas (Nane), and Mary Gibson; Ryan (Kathleen), Evan, and Austin (Jess) Eaton; Molly and Gordon Gibson; and Mindy and the late Luke Castello; and great grandmother of Michael Gibson and Liam Eaton. She was predeceased by her parents, Bebe and Karl Wolfe.
After graduating with a B.S. in Mathematics from Thiel College, she worked for Westinghouse as a mathematician, a rarity in those days for a woman. It was there that she met the love of her life, Gordon Gibson. They started their lives together in California for nine years before returning to Pittsburgh. Later in her career, while raising her family, she earned a M.S. in Library Science from University of Pittsburgh and worked part-time as a reference librarian at the USC Township library.
She was both a strong and graceful woman, never complaining through difficult times, and handling all situations with dignity. Having grown up during the Great Depression and World War II, she recognized and appreciated the comforts of her life and reacted negatively to any sense of excess. She was kind, loyal, and thoughtful, and had a strict sense of right and wrong. She worked hard to instill these qualities in her children and grandchildren. She had a great wit and appreciated a good sense of humor. She was a great listener and conversationalist and enjoyed nothing more than a glass of bourbon and a good chat. She quietly helped others in need while never wanting recognition.
She was good at everything she tried. She not only excelled in math and science, but was also well-read, with impeccable grammar and a vocabulary larger than most; even so, she would open the dictionary daily to learn a new word. She was an artist; she used her creative talents in beautiful needlework, knitting, and sewing and, in her younger years, she sculpted and painted. She dearly loved her dogs throughout her life, including her current dog Murphy, and treated them like royalty.
While she enjoyed her career, nothing matched her fierce love of, and devotion to, family and friends. This is reflected in the many who loved her and will live on through the generations of her family.
A private memorial service and celebration of life will be held in her honor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to World Wildlife Fund, ASPCA, or Paws for Purple Hearts.
