(Mary) Diane Paull Obituary

Nature’s first green is gold,

Her hardest hue to hold.

Her early leaf’s a flower;

But only so an hour.

Then leaf subsides to leaf.

So Eden sank to grief,

So dawn goes down to day.

Nothing gold can stay.

-Robert Frost

Diane passed away under the loving care of the staff at Residence of Chardon in Chardon, Ohio, on January 5 after a brief battle with colon and liver cancers.

She grew up in Pitcairn and graduated from Gateway High School. She enjoyed writing and illustrating books that she passed around to friends. She was an avid reader and particularly enjoyed novels and tv shows tied to detectives. Those who knew Diane knew her passion for college football and basketball as well as NFL. She waved that Terrible Towel throughout her life.

She is preceded in death by her father William Duncan, mother Mary Jane Duncan (Bender), and siblings, Bill, Jim, Larry, Gary, and Sandy. Survived by her sister Nancy and brother Tom.

She married Phillip DeLane Paull (deceased) and moved to Dormont where they built a beautiful life for their three children Jason (deceased) (Jenny) Paull, Beth (Kenneth) Davey, and Joanna (John-Wesley) Whetstone. In that home, they enjoyed the proximity to Dormont Park, the Pop Murray baseball field, and the Dormont Pool. While caring for her young children, Diane joined the Dormont Mother’s Club who served as a wonderful social and emotional support system for her for many years. Diane was steadfastly dedicated to her family and their happiness, writing puppet shows, reading with them, being that shoulder to cry on or that one they ran to share wonderful news, always supporting them in all of their passions, attending football games, working the concession stands, watching her children play in the KOHS marching band and cheerleading squad, and providing pans of brownies and other goodies to Jason and his many rock band members through the years. She was truly the foundation of this family and will be achingly missed. Even after her children moved away from home and built their own families, Diane was on the phone listening to their families’ stories.

When the children grew, she returned to the workforce and grew passionate about her administrative assistant work at the Webb Law firm.

Later in life, her grandson Dylan moved in with her and built a supportive relationship with his grandmother. She was so thankful for his kindness, patience, and love through those years.

She is survived by 10 grandchildren: Ashley (Lee) Peters, Darylyn (Cameron) McNabb, Steven (Mariah) Romo, Ava Paull, Skylar Paull, Dylan Davey, Margaret Davey, Zoe Whetstone, Johnny Whetstone, and Nathan Whetstone. She is survived by 9 great-grandchildren: Liam, Ezra, Lucy, Addison, Beckett, Daisy, Kellan, Finley, and Emmelyn.

The family will receive visitors on Thursday, January 9 from 3 to 7 pm at Laughlin Cremation & Funeral Tributes, 222 Washington Rd. Pittsburgh, PA 15216, where we will meet at 12:30pm on Friday, January 10 before the funeral service and burial at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery at 1pm.
