Mary Martha Carney Obituary

of Mt. Lebanon peacefully passed away on July 21, 2022 at age 91. Marty was a teacher, librarian and a writer who lived and worked in Mt. Lebanon for over 60 years.

Marty was born to Michael and Anna (Beskett) Lazorcak on August 15, 1930 and was raised on the South Side of Pittsburgh.  She graduated from South High School and later the University of Pittsburgh earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Education in 1952.  She had dreams of becoming a reporter and went to work for the Pittsburgh Press after graduation.  The next year, she met her late husband, Richard C. Carney and they married in 1954.

Marty and her husband moved to Mt. Lebanon in 1960 where they raised their four children. Marty was active in her community participating in the PTA and her children’s activities. As her children grew, she became a substitute teacher for Mt. Lebanon Public Schools and later began working at the Mt. Lebanon Public Library from which she retired in 2000.  She was a member of St. Anne’s Church where she taught CCD classes and was involved in Christian Mothers.  She was a member of the Mt. Lebanon Women’s Club, an active member of the South Hills College Club, and was instrumental in the founding of the Mt. Lebanon Historical Society.

After her husband’s death in 1980, Marty poured her energy into her family, her work and remained active in the community, however she never gave up her love of writing. Over the years she wrote numerous book reviews for the Pittsburgh Press, worked as a freelance writer for the Pittsburgh Tribune Review covering municipal news, and wrote articles for Mt. Lebanon Magazine.  A former colleague recalled recently being asked for a copy of an article Marty wrote for Mt. Lebanon Magazine on the 1950’s Red Scare.

At age 75, Marty was asked to return to work part-time and manned the Information Desk at the Mt. Lebanon Municipal Building for close to 9 years.  She retired completely in 2015 at the age of 84 and spent time with her family and her four grandchildren who she adored.

She will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, and friend. In addition, she’ll be remembered for her quick wit, her spirit, energy, and willingness to always help others.

Marty is survived by her children;  Lee Veltri, Richard C. Carney, Jr. (Diane), Philip S. Carney (Andrea Escher) and Susan M. Carney,  four grandchildren: Maggie Veltri (Jonathan) Meinzer, Craig Veltri (Halee), Kathryn Carney (Daniel Clayton) and Erin Carney; her sister, Margie Dugas (Robert); and nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband, Richard C. Carney and her brothers, Michael and Paul Lazorcak.

Friends will be welcomed at Laughlin’s Funeral Home on Washington Road in Mt. Lebanon Thursday, July 28, 2022 from 3:00-8:00 p.m.  A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 29 2022 at St. Anne’s Church, 400 Hoodridge Drive at 10:00 a.m. Interment is at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Mt.
