Paula F. (Flynn) Maniago Obituary
Age 89, of Mount Lebanon, PA, passed away peacefully on June 25, 2026. Daughter of the late Paul Eugene Flynn and Margaret Bothwell (Meyer) Flynn; beloved wife of the late David Pierre Maniago; loving mother of Paul Maniago (Pamela Swent), Pierette VanRyzin (David) and Peter Maniago (Wendee); devoted grandmother of Paul VanRyzin (fiancé Lauren), Rebecca Hanus (Andrew), Rachel VanRyzin, Steven Maniago (Mikayla), PJ Maniago (Sarah), and Maggie Dalio (Trevor); dear great-grandmother of Noah Maniago and Eden Rose Dallio.
Paula Flynn Maniago of Pittsburgh was a life-long member of the figure skating community and worked tirelessly as a competitive skater, volunteer, leader, official and judge for decades. In the late 1950s, Paula and her partner Bill Hess trained in Rochester NY under Hall of Fame coach Lew Elkin and went on to place 4th in Silver Ice Dance at the 1959 United States Figure Skating National Championship.
Later Paula pursued a career in the US Figure Skating Association as a judge for test and competition. She traveled across the country judging thousands of skaters at competitions and test sessions. She would ultimately earn an international judging appointment for ice dance. In her never-ending efforts to improve Figure Skating locally, Paula and her husband David were instrumental in founding the Ice & Blades of Western Pennsylvania Figure Skating Club which continues to this day at multiple arenas in southwestern Pennsylvania. They worked with Bob Mock, President of the National Figure Skating Association to standardize skating test results nationally. Paula authored technical books on skating moves and skills that are used to this day by coaches and judges in ice arenas across America.
Paula graduated with a degree in mathematics in 1958. She viewed math problems as fun puzzles to be solved. For decades she tutored local high school students in algebra and calculus sharing laughs and instilling confidence as they expanded their skills or simply worked to pass a difficult class so they could be free to explore their true passions.
Family and legions of friends will remember Paula for the goodwill, love and laughter that followed her.
