Originally from Mattoon, Illinois, Reginald “Reg” Tate, a lifelong resident of Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2026 at the age of 96. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 70 years, Lillian (Fleckenstein) Tate, and his son, Stephen.
He is survived by his children, David (Lynn) Tate, Carolyn (Michael) Lang, Robert (Lynda) Tate, Laura (Mark) McLaughlin, Paul (Ginna) Tate, Ann (Thomas) Tuchnowski, and Christine (Michael) Hoffman; his youngest brother, Richard (Diana)Tate of Chesterfield, Missouri; sister-in-law JoAnn Tate, sister-in-law Lois Dupre Shuster; and many cherished nieces and nephews.
Reg was also the proud grandfather of 17 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. He took immense pride in their accomplishments and was never shy about sharing their successes with others.
Reg was a man of quiet faith, selfless conviction, strong character, and unwavering resilience. Hardworking, dependable, kind, and generous, he touched the lives of countless family members, friends, colleagues, and neighbors. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and carried himself with warmth, humility, and gratitude throughout his life.
Reg met Lillian while attending Northwestern University on a football scholarship. After they married, the couple was stationed with the United States Marine Corps at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. Fate eventually brought them back to Pittsburgh, where Reg began his career in the family bakery.
For more than 70 years, Reg was the welcoming face of Potomac Bakery, greeting customers with his warm smile and often a box of sweet treats. He valued every customer and deeply appreciated the hardworking employees who became like family to him. His dedication, kindness, and work ethic left a lasting impression on generations of patrons and coworkers.
A true staple of the community, Reg was an active member of the Dormont-Mt. Lebanon-Castle Shannon Rotary Club. In retirement, he especially cherished his early morning "swim buddies" at the South Hills JCC. The "Best of the Best."
The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the compassionate caregivers and staff at Asbury Place and Family Hospice for the kindness, dignity and devoted care they provided to Reg. Their dedication will always be remembered with gratitude.
Family and friends are welcome to join in celebrating Reg's life at a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Michael the Archangel Parish, St. Bernard Catholic Church, 311 Washington Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15216, on June 9, 2026 at 10 a.m. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Michael the Archangel Parish, Mt Lebanon, PA,
Reg's gentle spirit, steadfast love for his family, and devotion to his community will be deeply missed and forever remembered. He was "One of a Kind".
