Richard Gideon Obituary

born May 4, 1948, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 14, 2026. He is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Katherine A. (Feuhrer) Gideon; three daughters, Heather Gideon, Beth McBroom (Scott), and Kathryn Weaver (Zach); four grandchildren Gideon, Timothy, Lorelei, and Liliana; and multiple nieces and nephews.

Richard had a variety of careers over the course of his life, beginning with his service in the United States Air Force in the late 1960s. His early career as a radio DJ started at WAVZ in New Haven, CT. This career path led him and his family to Pittsburgh, where he ultimately served as an on-air news reporter at KQV. After his time in radio, he became an Electronics Technology Instructor at Penn Technical Institute, retiring from there in the mid-1990’s. He was most proud of the last 31 years as a supplier of military streamers and historically accurate reproduction flags. His company, Richard R. Gideon Flags, supplied commissioned flags to museums and Civil War reenactors. He was a world-respected vexillologist.

He had a lifelong passion for aviation and earned his Private Pilot’s license in 1975. Richard loved animals, especially dogs, and would spend time teaching tricks to any dogs with which he was entrusted.

He was preceded in death by his sister Jane Gray and parents Robert and Ruby (Stockdale) Gideon.

Visiting hours have been omitted; service and interment in the Cemetery of the Alleghenies will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Light of Life Missions or the Washington Area Humane Society.
