Richard Sherwin Obituary

age 81, of Mt. Lebanon, PA died peacefully Friday, January 5, 2024 at Concordia of the South Hills Senior Retirement Facililty.  The son of George and Helen Sherwin, Richard was born and raised in Munhall, PA,  graduated from Bethany College, Bethany, WV in 1964, received his M.S. in Genetics from the Univ. of Pittsburgh in 1966, and completed his PhD. in Population Genetics at the Univ. of Illinois in 1972.   His post-graduate education included short courses on Transmission Electron Microscopy at Argonne National Laboratory, Argonne, IL; Experimental Mammalian Genetics at Jackson Laboratories, Bar Harbor, ME; Recombinant DNA Technology at Indiana University, IN; and Basic Cell and Tissue Culture at Catholic University, Washington D.C.  In the summers of 1991 through 1995, Dr. Sherwin was a consultant in the laboratory of Dr. Susanne M. Gollin, Graduate School of Public Health, Univ. of Pittsburgh.  In 1995-96 he spent a full year sabbatical working with a research team at the Univ. of Pittsburgh on Pediatric and Adult Brain Tumors and p53 gene expression.

Richard’s love for genetics was matched by his love of teaching.  He taught at the Univ. of Illinois, Chicago Circle Campus in 1972-1973; at Hanover College, Hanover, IN, 1973-1979;  Emory & Henry College, Emory, VA, 1979-1997;  and at the Univ. of Pittsburgh, 1995 -2008.

All his life, Richard was an avid model HO railroader.  His delight was the layout, and he spent hours planning and building his layout of a Colorado town of the mid-1800s..  He was also an opera fan and enjoyed being a “super” in some of the productions of the Pittsburgh Opera.   He loved to travel – the two favorites being a trip to the Galapagos Islands and one to the Bayreuth Opera in Germany.

Richard had a kind heart and a good sense of humor.  His smile will be missed.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 60 years, Andrea Sherwin, and their daughter Alison Sherwin Vick, Portsmouth, OH.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the Food Pantry , Mt. Lebanon United Methodist Church, Washington Road, Mt. Lebanon.
