Robert J. “Bob” Zywan, age 84, of Los Angeles, CA, formerly of Castle Shannon, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family on Monday, April 27, 2026, at Arden Courts of Jefferson Hills. Beloved brother of Carol (Gary) Leech; uncle of Arlene (Frank) Rhone and Jennifer (Justin Prolenski) Leech; great-uncle of Marcus and Isaiah Rhone. Also survived by many cousins. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, John “Zip” and Irene (Rech) Zywan and his niece, Joyce Leech.
Bob was a 1960 graduate of Dormont High School. He enlisted into the United States Air Force, where he proudly served from 1962 to 1966. Following his military service, he enrolled and graduated from the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics as an aircraft mechanic. He continued his passion in the aerospace industry as a mock shop specialist in Los Angeles. He enjoyed a fulfilling career that spanned decades, continuing until the industry underwent changes. Bob then began a new life chapter, joining the Beverly Hills Hilton in maintenance where he worked until his retirement in 2009.
He was well known for his dry sense of humor and his spirited, often intense, conversations on politics and religion. A true gearhead at heart, Bob had a deep love for his vehicles and anything mechanical.
Later in life, Bob embraced a much simpler way of living as he faced dementia. His family is deeply grateful to the compassionate team at Arden Courts of Jefferson Hills, whose care and dedication ensured that Bob, and all residents, felt genuinely loved. Through their kindness, his family grew in ways they will always cherish. Also, a special thank you to hospice team for their exceptional end of life care.
Friends will be received on Sunday, May 3, 2026 at Laughlin Cremation & Funeral Tributes, 1008 Castle Shannon Blvd., Pittsburgh, PA 15234 from 1:00 until 5:00. A blessing service will be held at the funeral home, Monday, May 4, 2026 at 10:00am. Interment with military honors to follow in Queen of Heaven Cemetery.
