Age 82, passed away Friday, September 1, 2023. Youngest son of the late John Lahet and Mary Kazar Lahet. Born in Hazleton, PA. Surviving Roy are his children, Stephanie( Romel),Tim (Lisa )and James (Jennifer) and grandchildren, Romel, Mary, John and Dante and many nieces and nephews that he cherished. He is also survived by his eldest brother, John, and was preceded in death by his brother, Lee.
Roy graduated from Garden Spot High School in New Holland, PA and Franklin and Marshall College, and went onto receive a Masters of Divinity from Mt Airy Lutheran Theological Seminary at Philadelphia. He became a Lutheran minister and served parishes in Connecticut and on the northside of Pittsburgh. He was known for his thought-provoking and engaging sermons. On the northside of Pittsburgh, he became interested in community affairs, tending to the needs of those of the less fortunate and underserved. He felt a calling to serve the community in ways outside of the church and took a leadership role in Community Action in Pittsburgh. Roy's role and interest in community MH/MR programs and association with the former St. John's Hospital led to the creation of Mercy Behavioral Health, which thrived under his executive leadership until his retirement.
Roy had avid avocations including a passion for the history of the Civil War, coin collecting, gun collecting and was a member of the Amateur Astronomers Association. To his grandchildren he was a “ cool grandpa” who taught them how to shoot, brought fireworks to the 4th of July celebrations , set up telescopes on Halloween to see the moon, but all without losing the common touch of simply enjoying good Mexican food together. We are grateful for the abundant knowledge he shared with us, and the example of lifelong learning he showed us.
Roy found healing and strength in the 12 step program and achieved decades of sobriety through its help. He gratefully shared it with many others.
We, and the many lives that he touched, in all the ways he supported them, will miss him dearly.
A Memorial Service is planned for October 14 at 10:30 am at Mt Lebanon United Lutheran Church. 975 Washington Rd Pittsburgh, PA
