Alfred S. Pelaez

October 19, 1935 ~ November 27, 2016 (age 81) 81 Years Old

Alfred S. Pelaez, 81, attorney and Professor Emeritus at Duquesne University School of Law, died November 27th, 2016. He passed with his three children by his side, engaging in lively conversation almost until the end. We will cherish that always. Al lived virtually his entire life in Pittsburgh. He was born in Forest Hills and attended public schools in Edgewood. He completed his Bachelors of Arts and law degrees at the University of Pittsburgh in 1957 and 1960, respectively. While at Pitt he lettered in baseball, soccer, and squash. Al was never one to let the grass grow under his feet. “Keep moving or you will rust” was a favorite motto. He completed his educational resume by attending Yale University and earning a Masters of Law degree in 1966, at which point he discovered a passion for teaching and embarked on his lifetime career as a professor of law at Duquesne University. Although he continued to practice law and to write, he gained the most enjoyment from teaching. For nearly 50 years he remained an energetic and engaging instructor. Al could hardly venture anywhere in the Pittsburgh area without being greeted enthusiastically by at least one former student. This obituary of Al's could be filled with pages of his many awards and professional accolades, but he cared more for relationships than for any of that. According to Al, his proudest accomplishment and his greatest love, was first and foremost his marriage to Mary Bridget Pelaez, who preceded him in death by sixteen years. He never stopped loving her and singing her praises and gave her equal credit for everything he ever achieved. He also adored his children and grandchildren. He is survived by his daughters Mara Pelaez and Linda Pelaez Hattenbach (Brad), and son John Pelaez (Julie) as well as his five grandchildren—Emma, Blythe, Sebastian, Enzo, and Rocco—and his sister, Elaine Welling. Also precious to him were his countless wonderful friends, family, neighbors, and students far and wide, whom he spent a lifetime gracing with his wonderful intellect, humor, and generosity. He will be missed beyond measure. A Memorial Mass for Al will be held in the Duquesne University Chapel on Saturday January 7, 2017 at 10:00 AM, followed by a reception on campus. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Bridget Pelaez Endowed Student Resource Fund, Office of Development, Duquesne University, 4th Floor Administration Bldg., 600 Forbes Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15282.
