Joan Angela (Ohleger) Mendel

Age 82, of Mt. Lebanon, on Friday February 5, 2016.  Imagine someone who has the gift of life long natural beauty, vitality, spunk, generosity, and charisma. Joan was fond of all things sporty, including swimming, volleyball, tennis, skating, biking, water battles, and bonfires. She continued to alpine snow ski into her 80’s and enjoyed spending weekends at her mountain home in the Laurel Highlands. If she liked you, you probably would have received a box of her favorite chocolate from her. She somehow managed to work in her office until only a few weeks prior to her passing. She was a devout Catholic, entrepreneur, loving wife, wonderful mother, St. Bernard’s Sunday school teacher, volunteer, animal lover, gardener, great friend, and a very brave cancer fighter. She has touched so many lives and will be missed tremendously by many. Long time Mt. Lebanon resident, Joan Mendel, was preceded by her husband, lifelong true love, and co-founder of Mendel Steel, George T. Mendel, Sr. (1930-2005). Her parents Elwood & Angela Ohleger, Her sisters Jean Ohleger and June Hoffman. Survived by her brother James Ohleger, her sisters Joyce Berk and Janet Smith, and her sons George T. Mendel, Jr. and Eric L.J. Mendel. There will be no visitation. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered in St. Bernard Church on Friday February 12, 2016 at 11:30 AM.
