Thomas J. Masterson

February 11, 1923 ~ August 20, 2015 (age 92) 92 Years Old


Devoted husband of Marjorie and patriarch of a large and loving family, Thomas J. Masterson died peacefully on Thursday August 20, 2015 in his Dormont home, surrounded by his family .He was 92 years old. Tom was the father of five, grandfather of nine and great grandfather of eight with one more great grandchild expected soon. Tom was born and raised in Warren, PA and graduated from Warren Area High School in 1941. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served in St. John's Newfoundland in the 181st Signal Corps. After being Honorably Discharged as a Staff Sergeant, Tom returned to Warren where he met and married his wife, Marjorie Ann Gnagey, also of Warren. Tom and Marge moved to Pittsburgh in 1958 where they raised their five children. Tom worked for more than 45 years for Bell Telephone, retiring in 1985. He was a devoted member of St. Bernard Parish for more than 49 years. He volunteered for the Pittsburgh Guild for the Blind and for St. Bernard Church. Tom enjoyed watching his children's grandchildren's and great grandchildren's activities and sporting events. He loved the Pirates, Penguins and Steelers and was an avid hiker, traveler and bowler. Tom is survived by his wife, Marge, children, Ann (Wade) Bryant of Minneapolis, MN, Patti (Ron) Dedes of Whitehall, Kathy (Joe) Chavez of Mt. Lebanon, Thomas Masterson of Jupiter, FL and Joseph Masterson of Washington, D.C. Grandfather of Scott (Kim) Bryant of Austin, MN, Stacy (Travis) Noll of St. Paul, MN, Ryan (Mary Beth) Dedes of South Fayette, Colin (Erin) Dedes of Whitehall, Darren Dedes of Whitehall, Jean (Chris) Hostage of Boston, MA, Joseph and Jane Chavez of Mt. Lebanon and Megan Masterson of Jupiter, FL;  great grandfather of Madalyn and Cooper Noll,  Logan, Reagan and Savannah Dedes, Ella, Casen and Cameron Dedes, and another baby boy expected in January to Scott and Kim Bryant; brother of Mary Anne Masterson of Mt. Lebanon. Tom was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Nora Masterson, and his brothers James and Francis Masterson. Family and friends will be received at Laughlin Memorial Chapel  222 Washington Road Mt. Lebanon on Sunday 1-4 & 6-8 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered in the Lower Sanctuary of St. Bernard Church on Monday at 12 Noon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Pittsburgh Chapter, 1100 Liberty Ave. Suite E201, Pittsburgh, PA 15222 or to St. Bernard Church Angel Fund 311 Washington Road Pittsburgh, PA 15216.
