Sheldon S. "Don" Campbell

Sheldon Seymour "Don" Campbell, 83, died peacefully in his sleep Monday, Sept. 28, 2015, after spending the day with his family.  Born April 7, 1932, in Pittsburgh, he was preceded in death by his parents, William T. Campbell and Estelle White Campbell; his brother, William T. Campbell II; and his sister, Elaine Estelle Campbell. Don is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Roberta "Buncie" Douds Campbell; sons, David Edward Campbell and Erich Thomas Campbell; daughters-in-law, Torie A. Campbell and Kristen D. Campbell; and grandchildren, Brodie A. Campbell, Liam V. Campbell and Chelsey N. Campbell. He is also survived by nieces, Rear Admiral Elaine C. Wagner (Greg) and Dr. Janet C. Clark (Murray); nephews, Dr. William T. Campbell III (Lori) and Dr. Andrew C. Campbell (Heidi); and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. Don graduated from Oliver High School in 1950. He attended Muskingum University and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh, where he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. He earned a Master of Education from the University of Pittsburgh and a Supervisory Certificate from Duquesne University. He studied in Heidelberg, Germany, and received a master's degree in German from a National Defense Education Act (NDEA) year grant. Don taught at three NDEA summer institutes and was one of 25 German teachers selected by the U.S. Government to study Germany in the Common Market. Don began his teaching career in 1954 in Greensburg. He served in the Army from 1955 to 1957, including 18 months as an aide to General Melnyk in Karlsruhe, Germany. In 1959, he accepted a teaching position in Mt. Lebanon School District as a high school German teacher. In 1968, he became coordinator of the Foreign Language Department, a position he held until he retired in 1997. During this time, he taught German, supervised his department and was vice principal of the Junior High School for five years. Don began Mt. Lebanon's German Exchange program with a private high school, Stiftisches Gymnasium, in Duren, Germany. The program is currently in its 33rd year. After retirement, Don was elected to and served on the Mt. Lebanon School Board for four years. Don was a member of the Mt. Lebanon Evangelical Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and a member of the board of trustees and sang in the Chancel Choir for 53 years. He was also a member, officer and former teacher of the Cornerstone Sunday School Class. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, 2015, and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, 2015, at LaughIin Memorial Chapel, 222 Washington Road, Mt. Lebanon. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, 2015, at Mt. Lebanon Evangelical Presbyterian Church (please meet at church), followed by private interment in Beaver Mausoleum, Beaver. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Organ Fund at Mt. Lebanon Evangelical Presbyterian Church, 255 Washington Road, Pittsburgh, PA 15216; or the Sheldon Campbell Award in German at Mt.
